Online real-money betting is prohibited across India. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 was gazetted on 22 August 2025 and came into force on 1 May 2026. It applies nationally and covers games of skill and games of chance alike.
State law still matters, but not in the way it used to. It governs offline gambling and adds its own penalties on top of the central ban — it no longer creates a "grey area" in which online betting is permitted. Use this checker to see what your state adds, not to find a state where online real-money betting is lawful. There is none.

No. Since 1 May 2026 the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 has prohibited offering, facilitating payment for, or advertising online money games anywhere in India. This applies whether the game is one of skill or of chance.
Yes, but it no longer creates an exception. State gambling laws continue to govern offline gambling and can add their own penalties, but they cannot permit what the central Act prohibits. States such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu had already legislated against online real-money gaming before the Act took effect.
E-sports and free-to-play social games fall outside the prohibition. The ban targets online real-money gaming specifically.
Offering or facilitating an online money game carries up to three years' imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹1 crore. Advertising and payment facilitation are separate offences.
