Cricket betting odds express an implied probability and determine the payout. In decimal format, the standard in India, your total return equals stake multiplied by the odds, and the implied probability is 1 divided by the odds. Across a full market those implied probabilities sum to more than 100%; the excess is the bookmaker's margin, known as the overround.
Odds are a price, not a prediction
It is tempting to read odds as the bookmaker's honest forecast. They are not. They are a price set to balance the book and guarantee a margin whichever way the match goes. Understanding that difference is the single most useful thing on this page.
The three formats
Decimal (the Indian standard)
The number is your total return per ₹1 staked, stake included. ₹100 at 2.00 returns ₹200: ₹100 profit plus your ₹100 back. The formula is simply stake × odds = total return.
Fractional (traditional UK)
5/1 means five units of profit for every one staked. ₹100 at 5/1 returns ₹600: ₹500 profit plus the ₹100 stake. To convert to decimal, divide the fraction and add 1, so 5/1 becomes 6.00, and 2/5 becomes 1.40.
American (moneyline)
Positive figures show profit on a 100 stake (+150 returns 150 profit). Negative figures show the stake needed to profit 100 (−200 means staking 200 to win 100). Rare in Indian cricket markets, common in US-facing products.
Implied probability: the number that actually matters
Convert any decimal price to the probability it represents:
Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds
- 2.00 → 1 ÷ 2.00 = 50%
- 1.50 → 1 ÷ 1.50 = 66.7%
- 4.00 → 1 ÷ 4.00 = 25%
This tells you what the market thinks has to be true for the price to be fair.
The overround: where the house edge hides
Take a two-way market priced 1.90 / 1.90. The implied probabilities are 52.6% and 52.6%. Added together: 105.2%.
Probability cannot exceed 100%. That extra 5.2% is the overround, the margin built into the prices. On a fair coin-flip market with no margin, both sides would be 2.00 and the total would be exactly 100%.
This is why the arithmetic runs against the bettor over time regardless of how well anyone reads a pitch. You are not being asked to be right; you are being asked to be right by more than the margin.
Working it through
Three-way market at 2.50 / 3.20 / 4.50:
- 1 ÷ 2.50 = 40.0%
- 1 ÷ 3.20 = 31.3%
- 1 ÷ 4.50 = 22.2%
- Total: 93.5% … which would be an underround, and does not occur in retail markets. Real three-way books typically total 104–112%.
